Packaging design Scotland | Hutton Creative
Hutton Creative is a specialist packaging designer based in Scotland, with over 30 years of experience creating packaging for whisky, spirits, premium food and drink, and luxury FMCG brands. Working from Kilmacolm near Glasgow, I design packaging that performs on-shelf, in photography, and in the hands of the end consumer.
WHAT IS Packaging Design?
Packaging design is the process of creating the visual and physical presentation of a product - the label, box, bottle shape, outer carton, or gift set - in a way that communicates the brand's identity, appeals to the target consumer, and meets practical production and retail requirements.
For premium products like whisky, gin, or fine food, packaging is often the primary sales tool. Consumers make purchase decisions based on what they see on-shelf or online. Great packaging doesn't just look good - it tells a story, justifies a premium price point, and builds brand loyalty over time.
Packaging DesigN services
I offer a complete packaging design service from initial concept through to print-ready production files. This includes:
LABEL DESIGN:
Label design for bottles, jars, cans and pouches. Specialists in whisky and spirits labels, including front label, back label, neck label, and closure labels. I work with traditional print techniques - foiling, embossing, debossing, spot UV - as well as digital print for short runs.
box & carton design:
Gift boxes, presentation cartons, tubes, and outer shipper design. I design packaging structures that protect the product, create a premium unboxing experience, and work within your budget. I liaise directly with paper merchants and printers to spec the right materials.
full brand packaging systems:
For new product launches or brand refreshes, I can design a complete packaging system across multiple SKUs - ensuring visual consistency from your flagship expression through to your limited editions and gift sets.
limited edition & collector packaging:
Specialist design for limited edition releases, collector tins, wooden gift boxes, and anniversary expressions. Recent project includes the Glenmorgen Limited Edition collector whisky box.
Whisky and spirits packaging
Whisky and spirits packaging is a particular specialism. I have worked with distilleries and independent bottlers across Scotland and the UK to create packaging that communicates provenance, craft, and quality. Whether you're launching a new single malt, creating a travel retail exclusive, or refreshing an existing range, I bring category knowledge and design expertise to every project.
Clients include Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, The Perfect Fifth, Glenmorgen and Ardgowan Hospice (limited edition Gin).
The packaging design process
1. Discovery and brief
We start with a conversation about your product, your brand, your target consumer, and your budget. I ask the right questions upfront so that the design work is focused and efficient from day one.
2. Concept development
I develop initial design concepts - typically two or three distinct directions - and present them with clear rationale. You'll see how the design works across different formats and in context (on-shelf, in photography, on a website).
3. Refinement and sign-off
We refine the chosen direction based on your feedback. I handle all the technical production artwork - die lines, colour profiles, print-ready files - and liaise with your printer or manufacturer to ensure the design is produced exactly as intended.
4. Production support
I stay involved through to final print approval. I can review proofs, attend press checks, and advise on any production issues that arise during manufacture.

Frequently asked questions
-
Costs vary depending on the scope - a single label design is a very different project to a full brand and range. I am transparent about fees from the outset and will provide a clear quote once I understand what you need. Get in touch for an initial conversation.
-
Every project is different, but typically I move through: brand discovery and briefing, concept development, design refinement, print-ready artwork, and production liaison. For new spirits brands, that might also involve naming, brand identity, and structural packaging guidance. I keep the process collaborative and straightforward.
-
A focused label or packaging refresh typically takes four to eight weeks from briefing to final artwork. More complex projects - new brand creation, full range packaging, or gift set design - take longer. I will agree a timeline before starting and keep you updated throughout.
-
Absolutely. I work with new distilleries and independent bottlers from the ground up - from naming and brand identity through to full packaging design and print-ready artwork. Starting early in the process means the design can shape the product positioning, not just follow it.
-
Whisky and spirits are our core specialism - with over 30 years of experience in the category - but I work across premium drinks and luxury consumer goods more broadly. If your brand sits in that world, we're likely a good fit.
-
Spirits packaging is a highly competitive, heavily regulated, and craft-driven category. A specialist understands the printing and finishing techniques used in the industry, knows what works on shelf and in export markets, and can work fluently with distilleries, bottlers, and print suppliers. Generalist agencies can produce good-looking work; specialists produce work that performs in the real world of your category.
-
Yes, and I enjoy it. Independent distilleries and craft spirits producers often have the most interesting stories to tell. Whether you're bottling your first release or developing a full product range, I can work to your scale and budget.
-
Yes. Hutton Creative is a specialist branding and packaging design studio based near Glasgow, Scotland. I work with whisky distilleries, craft spirits producers, and drinks brands across Scotland, the UK, and internationally.
-
Yes. While I am based in Scotland and have strong roots in Scotch whisky, I work with clients across the UK and internationally. Most projects are managed remotely with no issues. I already work with clients in the USA and India.
-
The more context the better - your brand story, target audience, price point, any existing brand assets, and a sense of the direction you're hoping for. If you're starting from scratch, don't worry; part of my process is helping you find and articulate that direction. A clear brief leads to better work, faster.
