Beverage Packaging Design for Drinks & Spirits

Hutton Creative is a specialist beverage packaging designer based in Scotland, with over 30 years of experience in the drinks industry. As a dedicated drinks packaging designer, I work across the full beverage category - from premium whisky, gin, and spirits to craft beer, wine, energy drinks, and specialist soft beverages.

Every drinks brand has a story to tell. Your packaging is the first physical touchpoint with your customer. Whether you're launching a new drinks brand, refreshing existing spirits packaging, or designing beverage labels for a new product line, professional drinks packaging design matters. I understand the unique challenges of packaging design for beverages - the regulatory requirements, the shelf impact, the brand storytelling, and the technical print specifications.

As a specialist beverage packaging designer, I've worked with distilleries, independent bottlers, craft breweries, and drinks brands to create packaging that sells, stands out, and tells the right story.

WHAT IS Packaging Design?

Beverage packaging design is the process of creating the visual and physical presentation of a drinks product - from the label and bottle design to the complete brand system. For drinks brands, packaging is far more than protection. It's your primary sales tool, your brand ambassador, and often the only physical touchpoint before purchase.

In the competitive drinks market - whether spirits, beer, wine, energy drinks, or soft beverages - packaging design directly impacts consumer perception, shelf visibility, and sales. A well-designed drinks label catches the eye. Professional beverage packaging tells your story. Strategic drinks packaging design drives purchase decisions.

This is why specialist drinks packaging design matters. A generic packaging designer might understand color and typography. A specialist beverage packaging designer understands the drinks category - the regulations, the shelf environment, what consumers expect, and how to make your drinks brand stand out in a crowded market.

Whisky and spirits packaging

Drinks Packaging Design - Our Core Specialism While I work across the full beverage category, whisky and spirits packaging is where our deepest expertise lies. With over 30 years of experience in drinks packaging design, I've worked with distilleries, independent bottlers, and spirits brands to create packaging that wins awards, tells stories, and drives sales.

The drinks industry - particularly premium spirits - demands packaging design excellence. Regulatory compliance. Premium brand positioning. Shelf impact in competitive categories. This is specialist territory, and it's where I've built my reputation.

Whether you're launching a new whisky brand, refreshing a legacy spirits label, or creating a limited edition release, specialist drinks packaging design matters.

Whisky and spirits packaging is a particular specialism. I have worked with distilleries and independent bottlers across Scotland and the UK to create packaging that communicates provenance, craft, and quality. Whether you're launching a new single malt, creating a travel retail exclusive, or refreshing an existing range, I bring category knowledge and design expertise to every project.

Clients include Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, The Perfect Fifth, Glenmorgen and Ardgowan Hospice (limited edition Gin).

The packaging design process

1. Discovery and brief

We start with a conversation about your product, your brand, your target consumer, and your budget. I ask the right questions upfront so that the design work is focused and efficient from day one.

2. Concept development

I develop initial design concepts - typically two or three distinct directions - and present them with clear rationale. You'll see how the design works across different formats and in context (on-shelf, in photography, on a website).

3. Refinement and sign-off

We refine the chosen direction based on your feedback. I handle all the technical production artwork - die lines, colour profiles, print-ready files - and liaise with your printer or manufacturer to ensure the design is produced exactly as intended.

4. Production support

I stay involved through to final print approval. I can review proofs, attend press checks, and advise on any production issues that arise during manufacture.
